The core of the panel adopts high-density closed-cell extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam. With a closed-cell ratio above 95% and volumetric water absorption below 1%, the core fundamentally blocks water and water vapour penetration. Unlike ordinary boards that only rely on surface coating for waterproof protection, the XPS core delivers consistent waterproof performance through the whole panel. Double-sided alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh is thermally compounded on both sides of the foam core, which effectively limits deformation, prevents surface cracking and improves tensile strength. The outer layer is covered with polymer-modified cement coating, forming a rough cement-textured surface that creates firm adhesion with tile adhesive and thin-set mortar, greatly lowering risks of tile hollowing and detachment.
This unique structural design expands the product's applicable boundaries far beyond traditional shower rooms. In residential and commercial kitchens, the backer board copes with frequent water splashes, cooking steam and temperature fluctuations, preventing mold growth and wall degradation behind tiled splashbacks and kitchen floors. For floor installation, qualified panels offer compressive strength above 250 kPa, capable of supporting large-format tiles, marble and sintered stone slabs; the lightweight characteristic reduces dead load on buildings, which is particularly valuable for multi-storey renovation and upper-floor projects. As exterior wall substrate, it offers thermal insulation together with moisture resistance, protecting exterior structures from rain erosion and temperature alternation, widely specified for villa facades and commercial building exterior tiling.
Nevertheless, contractors and specifiers should clarify application limits. The XPS composite tile backer board is not recommended for locations with continuous high temperature or open flame such as stove inner walls. For these extreme working conditions, cement-based backer boards remain a more appropriate option. All our XPS backer boards pass strict laboratory testing and hold CE and UKCA certification, fully complying with European and American building safety standards. We supply thickness ranging from 6 mm to 50 mm, standard sizes in stock and custom-cut dimensions available according to construction drawings. Complete factory records and workshop photos can be provided to global distributors and engineering contractors for project tender verification
For building material distributors, general contractors and project developers in Europe and North America, proper installation and standardized procurement are two core factors to maximise the long-term performance of XPS composite tile backer boards. As a lightweight, integral waterproof substrate for wet areas, exterior walls and indoor flooring, the panel can deliver stable service life only when installed following standard procedures and selected according to clear procurement indicators.
The whole installation workflow is highly operable with strong error tolerance. During layout, 3–5 mm expansion joints must be reserved between adjacent panels to absorb thermal expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes. After cleaning joint gaps, waterproof mortar mixed with fiberglass sealing tape is applied and levelled smoothly. For wall-floor internal corners and wall internal corners, workers shall shape mortar into fillets and apply widened waterproof sealing tape to strengthen anti-leakage performance. Flexible waterproof sealant is required around pipes, floor drains and all penetration openings. Unlike traditional multi-layer waterproof systems that demand repeated membrane brushing, the XPS backer board simplifies the construction chain and reduces leakage risks caused by human operation errors. Another prominent advantage lies in convenient cutting: workers can cut panels with regular tools on site, generating minimal dust compared with cement boards, improving jobsite environment and construction efficiency
